About Us

The Kingdom of Cambodia is considered a “biodiversity hotspot” in mainland Southeast Asia. Plants are very important in many parts of Cambodian day life and culture. They are eaten as food, made into medicines, used as decoration, and are incorporated into specific rituals for many rites of passage and community events.

We began Plant Planet Plate as a way to share, safeguard, and celebrate the bio(cultural) diversity of Cambodia with plant enthusiasts all over the world.

Since, Plant Planet Plate has grown to include other locations outside of Cambodia. Plant Planet Plate Limburg, formed in April 2023, applies similar plant humanities approaches to document and celebrate the ethnobotanical legacies of plants found in the south of The Netherlands. We are always looking to connect and collaborate with others working towards biocultural diversity celebration, protection, and preservation.

OUR MISSION

OUR APPROACHES

We have a mixed methods approach towards plant humanities. Our research approach combines: conducting individual and group interviews, focus groups, photo elicitation exercises, collecting and preparing plant voucher specimens, noting down recipes, and practising visual ethnography through photography and video recordings.

We strongly believe in building local capacities, which means offering many opportunities to students and community members to build their career profiles and skill sets while working with us.

Science is for everyone, and we stand by that. We think of ourselves as storytelling scholars, who love plants and celebrating biocultural diversity. Our archive uses the open-access infrastructure JSTOR Juncture, includes open-data linking through WikiData, and our code is available to view on Github.

ETHICS

Our initiatives undergo several forms of ethical procedures and regulations to ensure we conduct our research activities respectfully. We combine intersectoral and international approaches to do so.

Generally, we operate under the Professional Code of Conduct of Green Shoots Resources and Green Shoots Foundation. Additionally, we seek research ethical clearance through universities and national ethics committees. We also regularly meet with local community leadership and members to outline and share our projects’ scopes, aims, and objectives. We updated interested stakeholders through community talks/events, open-access materials, and more. We are nothing without our community!

Plant Planet Plate received ethical clearance from the Ethics Committee of Universitá degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche through a resolution passed on March 31st, 2022.

Plant Planet Plate Limburg received ethical clearance from the Niet-WMO Verplicht Research Ethics Committee at the Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University (The Netherlands) with approval number FHML-REC/2023/105.
